Wilfa ICM-C15 Review

I just got a new ice cream machine! You can get it here.

To try it out, I made a raspberry ice cream, recipe is coming soon.

The old one was of the kind where you put a part of it into the freezer for at least 24 hours before using  it, which was a little annoying, since you needed to plan ahead and you couldn't make more than one batch per day. This one on the other hand, has a built in compressor that freezes the ice cream, so no need to pre-freeze anything and you can make as many batches as you want in a row.

It looks rather nice, with it's aluminium shell, and it feels like it is of good quality.

Included in the box is the machine itself, an instruction manual, a measuring cup, and a spatchula-like thing.

Disassembled

It has some pretty smart features. The container for the ice cream is fitted with a handle, to make it easy to remove, and the spatchula-like thing is just the right size for getting the ice cream out of the bowl. Once started, it has a timer, so it will stop automatically when it runs out, but it will continue to keep the ice cream frozen for 1 hour after that. That means that if you forget to check it, it won't melt immediately. The default timer setting is 1 hour, but when I tried it it only took about half of that.

While the machine is running, the display shows remaining time and the current temperature (of the machine, not the ice cream).

There are a few downsides to this device. The aluminium surface collect fingerprints really easily, the machine is big and heavy, and it's quite noisy.

The size is 402 × 335 × 281 mm, so it takes up a significant amount of space, and you probably won't want to move it every time you want to use it, since it's pretty heavy. It's "feet" seem to be designed to make it easy to slide on a surface though, which is quite nice.

The noise-level is significant, but not unbearable. I'm including a video of it working, so you can get some idea.

All in all, I have to say that I would recommend the Wilfa ICM-C15. It works as advertised, has some nice features, and the result is delicious.

  1. Hi,
I just bought one of these to my wife for Christmas.
But now I am having doubts: is it really that noisy? I have read other reviewers saying that you can't have a conversation next to it when running. Is that really so?

  2. Hi MortenVinding,
Well... It is pretty loud. If you really want to stand right next to it and have a conversation, you'll need to raise your voice a little.
However, I think that's pretty much standard for these machines, in this price range. I tend to just turn it on and leave the room, letting it do its thing. Remember, it only takes about 30-45 minutes before the ice-cream is done.

  3. Hi TheJimpr,
Thanks a lot for your quick response.
Yes it is also my impression that most of the machines are quite noisy, I was just trying to figure out just about how loud. But it sounds like as long as there is a door between it is acceptable?
I think it's a keeper then (if she also thinks so that is :)). According to my calculations (which admittedly isn't that impressing), you have had it for almost half a year now, so is it still good? Would you still recommend it?
Once again: thank you soo much for your help.
    /Morten

    1. Hi MortenVinding,
As long as you don't feel the ned to stand right next to it, and especially if you can close the door on it, the noise isn't a big deal.
I would definitely still recommend it, it works great for me.

  4. Yes it's noisy but not to an unaceptable level. Almost like a microwaveoven. No problem being in the same room.

Whats you experience with the motor and it's ability to turn the ice? When outs have run for 30 min. the ice is so firm, that the motor will not turn. The ice is a little bit firmer than softice at that time. Guess it's has to get it's final freeze in the freezer ?

  5. My wife was very happy with the icecream machine.
She has already made several batches of icecream, to every family members big enjoyment :)
And yes Henrik you are absolutely right, the noise is very comparable to the level (and a bit to the kind) of noise a microwave makes.

We have only experienced the motor stop once. That was the first time we where using it. It stopped when we added some chopped AfterEights, and aparantly the cream from them, was so sticky it made the motor stop.
I guess we should either have let the icecream get colder or cooled the AfterEights so the wouldn't melt.
But yes I think if you want really firm icecream you would have to freeze it in the freezer. It's almost impossible to freeze something hard when there is motion in it (like water in a fountain or a river) I guess.

Our all time favorite is (as with our old Philips), the coffee icecream!

Henrik much did you pay? I guess you bought it in Denmark?
    I payed 1700 dkk in Rødovre :)
